Lymphedema
Lymphedema is a condition where tissue swelling occurs due to the buildup of protein-rich fluid that usually drains through the lymphatic system. Most commonly, it affects the arms or legs. This swelling can happen when lymph nodes are damaged, which can be caused by factors such as obesity, vein issues like varicose veins, or cancer treatments that impact lymph nodes. Any blockage in the lymph fluid drainage can lead to lymphedema.
Living with lymphedema can increase the risk of skin infections like cellulitis and sepsis, and it can also lead to chronic wounds. But there is hope and help available. Treatments often include supportive measures like compression bandages and stockings, gentle massage, and careful skincare. In some cases, sequential pneumatic pumping or surgery may be needed to help manage the swelling and create new pathways for fluid drainage. Our goal is to provide compassionate care and support to help you manage lymphedema and improve your quality of life.
